Mt. Hakodate

This is an observatory which commands a sweeping view of the urban area of Hakodate and the surrounding sea and mountains. You can enjoy "the panorama from Mt. Hakodate" that appears as three stars, the highest rank, in Michelin Green Guide Japon. You can get there by cable car (round trip 1,500 yen), by bus, by taxi, or by rental car.

This Catholic church was founded in 1877. The existing building was rebuilt in 1923. The magnificent altar in the cathedral was sent from the pope.

This is a notable historic building in Hakodate, designated as important cultural property. It has a magnificent main hall and rooms reserved for special guests. When members of the Imperial family visited Hakodate, they stayed and rested in the rooms. *The building will be closed for a major renovation until April 2021.

Former British Consulate of Hakodate

Former British Consulate of Hakodate
This building was used as the British Consulate from 1913 to 1934, which now is a historical memorial on the opening of the port of Hakodate. It is known for the tea room where you can enjoy some black tea looking over the rose garden.

Old Soma Residence

This was a private residence of a wealthy merchant Soma Teppei, built in 1908. It is located near the Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward, which was constructed through his generous donation. It is a Japanese-style heritage structure representative of Hakodate.

Hakodate St. John Church

This church is that of the Anglican Church founded by an English priest who visited Hakodate in 1874. The existing building was completed in 1979. It features the impressive cross-shaped roof.

Tachimachimisaki

Tachimachimisaki
A cape located at the southeastern end of Mt. Hakodate. You can get there after a 15-minute walk from the tram terminal. You will be impressed by the grand scenery of the steep cliffs surrounded by the sea. On clear days, you can see Aomori Prefecture across the Tsugaru Strait. Rugosa roses, the flower of Hokkaido, bloom beautifully here in summer.

This church is that of the Orthodox Church in Japan founded in 1859 by the Russian Consulate. The existing building, built in 1916, is known as a representation of western-style buildings in Hakodate. It has been designated as important cultural property.

The Tokugawa Shogunate, the Japanese government during the Edo period (1603-1868), closed the country to foreign commerce, except for the Netherlands and China. However, in 1854, Japan signed a friendship treaty with the United States, the United Kingdom, and Russia one after another. Hakodate became a port town open to foreign commerce. In 1858, Japan signed a trade treaty, and Hakodate became a trade port the following year.

Hakodate Magistrate Office
The Tokugawa shogunate was forced to give up its national isolation policy when an American fleet led by Admiral Perry of US Navy came to Japan in 1853, resulting in the opening of Hakodate port. Accordingly, the Hakodate Magistrate’s Office, an administrative institution of the shogunate was established. With many foreign ships found in the waters surrounding Japan in those days, the Magistrate’s Office was a shogunate's diplomatic policy base, and administrative center of Ezo region.
